The controversy surrounding Erykah's recent video for her new track "Window Seat" has escalated as Miss Badu refused to pay the $500 dollar fine assigned to her from a Texas court. She was given the charge of "disorderly conduct" due to the fact that she stripped her clothing in public throughout the course of the video.

The Dallas News has this to say...
Erykah Badu entered a plea of not guilty Wednesday to the charge of disorderly conduct in relation to a video in which she strips in downtown Dallas' Dealey Plaza. In March, the 39-year-old Dallas singer went nude in public for her video called "Window Seat." Badu said she picked Dealey Plaza since it was one of the most popular places in the city.
You can see more information on the issue HERE, and watch the video below.

While everyone who knows about it is still waiting for 24 Hour Karate School to drop, Stalley is steadily continuing to drop good music to bide the time. (Check out the video for his Ski-produced killer "S.T.A.L.L.E.Y." right HERE.)

His latest track, "Pressure," was crafted instrumentally by Michael Sterling Eaton, who is apparently working on a film project of the same title. Hopefully, we'll see more from Stalley and that project very soon. Until then, enjoy the track.

Peace.

Jay Electronica and Diddy are back again with a new track called "The Ghost of Christopher Wallace." It's nice to see Jay starting to come back with more material recently. (If you missed it, check out his latest video, "A Million in the Morning".)

Just waitin for Act II...

Props to DDot.

Blu dropped the first leak from his upcoming project, NoYork! the other day (check it out HERE). Today, he dropped the second via his Tumblr page.

The track doesn't have a name yet as far as I know, nor is there a proper download link. However, you can check out the track streaming over at his Tumbly page HERE. It's a bit different from what I expected, but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying it.

If you don't already fuck with Blu, now would be a good time to start. You can also catch him in Lupe's new "super group", the All City Chess Club, alongside Wasalu himself, Skateboard P, the Cool Kids, Asher Roth, B.o.B., Diggy, Wale, Charles Hamilton, and J. Cole. Check out the latest on that project right HERE.

Alright that's it for now.
Peace.

Lupe discusses how the group came into existence, how each member got on board, and more.
They already put us in the same box...since they putting us in a box, we might as well own the box.... Not necessarily a group, but a movement.
The official lineup is Lupe Fiasco, DJ "Skateboard P", B.o.B., the Cool Kids, Asher Roth, Charles Hamilton, Diggy, Wale, J. Cole, and Blu (who Lupe claims is the only rapper in the game who "scares him").

The first official All City Chess Club track will be the remix to "I'm Beaming", which is in the works.

Get stoked.
-Mike-
The Spitta recently held an exclusive listening party at Dame Dash's DD172 Studio for his new album, Pilot Talk. Check it out.

...No way that fuckin dude took a hit from a Fiji water bottle.

It's been a long time since the Marshall Mathers LP, and Em proves it on "Not Afraid", his first single from Recovery. Despite any negative hype that has ever surrounded the man, he proves here that he can still be a positive force. It's a little poppy from what I'm used to, but the force of the subject matter can't be denied.

He also lets loose on his opinions of his recent Relapse album:
Let's be honest, the last CD was ehh.
-Eminem, "Not Afraid"

Recovery hits stores June 22.

Also, Em recently phoned in to his own radio station, SHADE45, to discuss the new album, the new single, and other things (spotted @ RR)...

Part 1: Em speaks on becoming artist of the decade, trashed songs, and reveals that Havoc’s production is featured on Recovery too.

Part 2: Debuts “Not Afraid”

Part 3: Speaks on B.o.B’s “Airplanes 2″, Detroit Lions, and no skits on Recovery.

(Ouch about the St. Louis Rams reference.)

The best part about this is how real the dude is. Kinda puts a new spin on an artist who often comes off as dark and insensitive. Anyway, while you're at it, check out his new "Despicable" freestyle HERE.

Enjoy all that.
Peace.

Vtech and Mochilla are still blessing us with some great content from Timeless' A Suite For Ma Dukes. Here is the last gem they're giving out from the three DVD set with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson and The Suite for Ma Dukes Orchestra killing the Slum Village classic "Untitled/Fantastic." You can watch the L.A. performance of the Dilla masterpiece above.

New video from Lupe. Hopefully we'll get a new album sometime soon as well.

Just got ahold of two new leaks from Nas and Damian Marley's upcoming collaborative project. Support the duo and cop Distant Relatives when it drops May 18th. Until then, sample these.

The Gorillaz debuted their Plastic Beach material live in the US at the Coachella festival; unfortunately, due to the grounding of all European flights as a result of the spread of volcano ash, a lot of the performers weren't able to make the show.

No worries though, the G-Men made up for it with their recent performance on the UK's Jools Holland. Check some footage below featuring Mos Def, Bobby Womack, Kano, and Bashy. Definitely worth the viewing.

Peace.

The Adventures of Bobby Ray is out! Find it err'where.

To be honest, I'm not really feeling this. I did however like some other stuff from the album that dropped earlier. If you're interested, type "B.o.B." in the search bar on the top right of the blog (or click the B.o.B. tag on this post) to see what else has come out by the dude. I recommend the track with him and Lupe.

The Gorillaz have taken to the road yet again. As usual, they've mostly been booked to frequent large festivals and the like. This time around they're touring with the expansive roster of featured artists from various track throughout their three full-length albums, a full orchestra, PLUS an impressive live band featuring Mick Jones and Paul Simonon (the lead guitarist and bass player for the Clash respectively). From what I hear, there were supposed to be even more featured guests present on-stage, but the recent volcano-ash-spreading-across-the-world thing kept a large handful of them grounded in the UK.

Unfortunately, they're not coming anywhere near St. Louis, nor are the ticket prices likely to be within my budget. However, Gawd gave the earth Google, and Google hosts YouTube, and YouTube has a slew of amateur live videos from their recent Coachella performance.

Enjoy a couple below.
Peace.

God's Son and Junior Gong are dropping bomb after bomb from their Distant Relatives project. The video for "As We Enter" just dropped the other day (do yourself a favor and check it out HERE). Now they've got yet another new track. This is one of multiple songs featuring the work of Somali rapper K'Naan. Check it out below. (The album drops May 18 in the US.)

In related news, Nas announced today that he has another solo effort in the works. (Around 8:10 in the video below.)

Black Thought's side-group, the Money Making Jam Boys, made an appearance at the Etnies Showroom recently. The group, which features Black Thought of the Roots, Wajeed, Dice Raw, P.O.R.N., and STS, apparently have a project in the works.

Stay tuned for that.

Til then, enjoy the clip.

Spotted at Beats&Bombs.

New music from Lupe Fiasco just dropped. The track, titled "Love Letter to the Beat," features Alicia Keys and is probably from his (hopefully-)forthcoming album LASERS.

Keep your eyes and ears alert for any album info as it arrives.

Peace.
-Mike-

Right after just dropping the song the other day (see: HERE), Mia is back with a video to accompany her new track, "Born Free."

If this isn't the wildest video of the year so far, then it's definitely on the list for most important (perhaps tied with Erykah's "Window Seat" vid).

VIEWER DISCRETION: THIS VIDEO IS VERY GRAPHIC AND AT TIME VIOLENT. PLEASE KEEP THIS IN MIND BEFORE VIEWING. SOME IMAGES MAY BE DISTURBING.

Lupe Fiasco has changed his album plans multiple times over the past couple years. First, he announced at the end of his album The Cool that his next project would be titled LupE.N.D. It didn't take too long, however, for that to change.

It's possible that Lupe postponed the LupE.N.D. album (even after officially announcing it on record) due to the fact that the Black Eyed Peas had already announced a similar concept some time before. He then announced that his next project would be called The Great American Rap Album. Shortly thereafter he announced that that project would also be postponed with no mention of other projects. Once he announced his newest (and recently completed) album plans for LASERS a bit later, he put the Great American Rap Album way on the back burner and officially canceled LupE.N.D. You follow so far?

He then began working on LASERS and never mentioned the other projects again. It was safe to assume, given all the ADD-like behavior in relation to the projects early on, that the concept would never see the light of day. HOWEVER, that all changed the other day when Lupe posted this via his Twitter...

And that's what I was getting to with that long-winded history lesson. Lupe Fiasco has officially begun working on The Great American Rap Album. Officially.

Oh joy.

No official word yet on a release date for Ski Beatz' 24 Hour Karate School. However, from the looks of things, it should be dropping soon, especially given the fact that most of the tracks have been leaked, a few have been given the video treatment, and all of them were recently previewed live by Ski himself alongside some of the featured artists. Keep your fingers crossed.
Ski Beatz recently held a dope show at the Dojo along side his senseis and ninjas to play a few tracks off of the 24 Hour Karate School project that should be finally surfacing soon. For those that weren’t in attendance here is some footage to hold you over and show you what you missed out on.

After recently "reuniting", NERD is officially back with a new track called "Hot N Fun" featuring Nelly Furtado. The new album will be called Nothing.

The Roots have provided some further insight into their new album, How I Got Over, which is scheduled to drop sometime soon.

OkayPlayer has the goods...
The Roots are still planning on releasing their latest album, How I Got Over, very soon. News was announced that The Legendary have enlisted the help of Joanna Newsom, John Legend, and Jim James to fill feature spots on the LP. The album is being mixed, and Black Thought is just finishing his vocals. To go along with this news, ?uesto posted the above vid of him recording the Joanna Newsom track (he also says HIGO is coming in June).

M.I.A. is back with some rather progressive material. She's blended her famous techno/tribal/hip-hop style with an updated punk rock vibe in her new track "Born Free". (It reminds me of Lupe's new Japanese Cartoon project - check it out HERE. It's also definitely worth a listen.)

Streams and download links of the track are currently being hunted down and exterminated, so I can't post it here. However, you can catch the official stream over at DefPenRadio HERE. I highly recommend that you do so.

Enjoy the track.

Alright, the title may be a bit misleading. The challenge came on the basketball court and not behind the mic. Still, the rivalry is fun to watch.

Via OkayPlayer...
Converse's 2nd annual Band of Ballers basketball tournament will be going down in Atlanta on May 1st. With all these rappers pitted against each other, the trash talking was inevitable. In this clip, Sean Price, Jay Electronica, and Donnis (team Bad News) take shots at the reigning champs Jim Jones & The Jones Family (who have the advantage of having Shammgod Wells on their squad). But as Sean Price simply states "whether we win or lose on the court, we can still out rap any other team."

Underground hip-hop all-star Blu just dropped another track covertly on the net, as he has grown prone to doing. The song is called "BossCo.2" and is part of a project entitled NoYork! (exclamation point included).

Having just joined Lupe Fiasco's new hip-hop super group All City Chess Club alongside Cool Kids, Asher Roth, B.o.B., Diggy, and others, and with a full-length release in the works, it seems that Blu is steadily making the climb out of obscurity.

How this will affect his music, we will have to wait and see. If his steady output of solid music is any indication however, then we have very little to worry about. Check out his latest below.

Peace.
-Mike-

The wait is on for Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek's new Reflection Eternal album, Revolutions Per Minute. However, if you're like me and don't think you can wait another second for some new Kweli, you're in luck. DJ Chaps and Talib have just dropped a new mixtape entitled Early Mourning Signs.

Check it out below.

As always, enjoy the music.

NR: The second leak off the upcoming collaborative full length studio LP from M1 of dead prez and entirely produced by Bay Area DJ/producer DJ Child of Project Groundation Massive.

This track is by far my favorite yet to be released from this project. Not much info has been released on the video and the images are honestly not very revealing, but it's nice to see that they're putting some visuals to the audio.

Also, if you haven't checked out the track in question yet, be sure to do so HERE.

Finally, some newness from Jay Electronica. While the world (or at least the internet hip-hop heads) wait anxiously for Act II to drop, Jay is looking in a completely different direction.

This track comes in the form of a tribute to a feature film. Don't know much about the movie other than what I was able to piece together from the video - that it bears the same name as the track and revolves around a man being forced (or forcing himself) to remain awake for ridiculous periods of time. The movie looks really interesting and the track is (as always) amazing.

Enjoy!

After long periods of health problems including a year-long fight with cancer, Guru passed away yesterday, April 19, at the age of 43. As one half of the hip-hop duo Gang Starr, as well as the producer and MC on various solo projects, Guru continually contributed to the hip-hop community.

I suppose that hip-hop is reaching the period in its life as a genre when it's early architects are passing. If the steadily-rising skill of alternative/underground hip-hop artists is any indication, however, then the music is being left in steady hands.

The sophomore album from Kid Cudi, previously titled simply Cudder, has gotten a bit of a facelift. According to Cudi, the disc will now be called Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager. The reason? Direct from the Man on the Moon himself...
I started making this project like a collab album, filled with fun and upbeat records that for the most part left you with jack shit when you were finished listening. i took a step back, went on tour, and realized im where im at because of the type of songs i write. every time i read a comment from someone saying ive touched their lives in some way is what made me want to stop fucking around and continue pouring my life into my music.

MOTM2 is dark by nature and instead of bringing you into my dreams like my first album, im bringing you into my reality. good and bad. it will explain more of who iam aswell as pushing the envelope musically. this project will focus on many dark, fun, and ignorant moments in my life since ive been kid cudi in a exciting and cinematic nature continuing the MOTM theme. this is my darkest work so far with a hint of fun and grooviness for those who like the classic chill cudi sound but elevated to another level.

the things i cant speak will be the things i write. before anything else, you’d come to the conclusion i need a shrink, a stronger drug or a mentor. not a hug. a lot of you have read the news and think they know cudi, got some slick shit to say amongst your peers or just flat out hate me but you havnt the slightest clue of who iam. i will tell the story of Mr. Rager….

The second installment of the Nas & Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley music meeting at the Digiwaxx headquarters in Harlem.

In this episode, the duo answers the tough questions like how does it feel getting older in hip hop and how to tread the line of commercialism while “keeping it real.”
Still no word on a release date for Lupe's new album, LASERS. By the time the date is finally announced he will likely have released every track one by one live. As long as people post videos and mp3s online, I'll be cool with that.
-Mike-

PS: What's with that face @ 0:56? Looks a bit familiar...

Slim Shady's current project has been renamed from Relapse 2 to Recovery.
“…as I kept recording and working with new producers, the idea of a sequel to Relapse started to make less and less sense to me, and I wanted to make a completely new album. The music on Recovery came out very different from Relapse, and I think it deserves its own title.”
The new album will features production by Just Blaze, as well as relative newcomers DJ Khalil and Boi-1da. According to Em, fans can expect the album June 22.

The newest release from Nas and Damian's forthcoming release, Distant Relatives. This track features Dennis Brown. Not my favorite release from this project so far, but definitely worth a good listen. Catch the album next month.

After the controversy that followed her latest video for the track "Window Seat" from her new album, New Amerykah Part II: Return of the Ankh, as well as the charges that she faced as a result, Miss Badu has revisited the video to deliver it again in a new light.

This time, the end-video dialogue is moved to the front and the whole thing is shown in reverse.

Also, Erykah recently sat down with Wanda Sykes to discuss the video, among other things. She followed the interview with a live performance of the song. You can catch the footage HERE.

Then, during “Exhibit A”, the most electric moment I’ve ever experienced during a live performance happened. First, Electronica told everybody to come on stage. Literally. He invited every member in the audience to the stage. Then a familiar voice piped in with an adlib. And, out of nowhere, Mos Def – red mic in hand- spit his own verse over the “Exhibit A” beat and New Orleans welcomed its newest resident by going completely ape shit the whole time.

Gorillaz Fan Club (aka G-Club) members got the chance for a super exclusive peek at the group's rehearsals for their series of upcoming shows across Europe and the US. Last time the Gorillaz did a live tour they featured a live band all but completely hidden from the crowd beneath a large screen showing animations to the music; before that, the group performed via 3D animated characters. This time around, they're performing fully live with an actual band. Notable members include Mick Jones and Paul Simonon of the Clash who appeared together for the first time since the Clash disband on the Gorillaz' latest project, Plastic Beach.

Catch some footage of the rehearsals below. The actual shows will of course feature some of or all of the artists who are featured in the songs.

If you're lucky, you may be able to catch them live this time around, but only if you're willing and able to fork over the hefty festival fees (such as Coachella) for the events at which they'll be performing.

Blu has quickly become one of my (if not my top) favorite MCs. To me he sort of fits the same mold as Jay Electronica: unmatched lyricism and final products that are always more important than release dates and convention. I like that.

After a steady flow of mixtapes and various projects, Blu has finally settled on a release date for an official album. The as-of-yet unnamed album will drop in June. However, take this announcement with a grain of salt. Like Jay Elect, Blu is not exactly the most concerned with timelines (as mentioned above), and we're still all waiting on Act II. Just saying.

Still, the project promises to be dope.

Holy crap this is amazing.

Lupe Fiasco confirmed very recently that a new group called All City Chess Club has been formed and consists of the following hip-hop all-stars:

Lupe Fiasco
The Cool Kids
Asher Roth
B.o.B.
Charles Hamilton (newly revamped)
Blu
Diggy (newly introduced)
J.Cole
Wale

Not quite sure what ever happened to the Child Rebel Soldier group (Lupe x Kanye x Pharrell), but this definitely makes up for their lack of content if you ask me. I'm assuming that with such a large list of players, the group is bound to release a flurry of material soon.

As a matter of fact, they were just in the studio yesterday...
