Jay breaks down his technique and style in this video that coincides with the release of his new book 'Decoded'.

If you're like most people, you either spent Black Friday (ie. the day after Thanksgiving) waiting in early-morning lines to buy crap, or sleeping off a tryptophan-induced turkey coma.  However, if you're anything like the cool folks who fuck with Lane4, SoManyDynamos, and Black Spade in St. Louis, then you were out at Fresh Paint II: Black Friday at 2720 Cherokee for one of the best shows St. Louis has ever offered thus far.

The evening was complete with art displays, photography, good drinks, great company, and stellar music, INCLUDING a once-in-a-lifetime team up between SoManyDynamos and Black Spade.

You can check out SoManyDynamos' entire set below, including the couple of tracks they did with BSpade (which kicks in around the 20 minute mark - I told you it was a full set, making it long as hell...and this is part 03 of the whole set video).

Definitely enjoy this shit and be sure to keep your eyes and ears open for future shows of the same ilk.

After a few months of talk, pics, and teasers, the Men With Beards have finally released something that sounds like a full song.

If you feel the same as I do, you'll definitely agree that this is worth the wait.

No word yet on the release date for the Dark Side EP or the Men With Beards LP, but both are in the works and near completion.  I'd expect a Spring release if I was you.

T.Shirt is back with another wicked video.  This time he took a cameraman to a movie theater somewhere in downtown NYC and did a one-shot video to the track "24 Frames (Movie Night)".

Check it out here (and don't forget to catch T.Shirt on the Men With Beards LP when it drops this Spring).

W.A.R. (We Are Renegades) drops March 22nd via Duck Down Records.

What a crazy freaking lineup!  Everybody who went to see Lupe Fiasco at his two-night residency with jazz musician Robert Glasper at the Bluenote in NY got a special treat on the 2nd night.

Kanye and Mos stopped by for an unannounced freestyle session with astounding results and reception.

Talib's new mixtape, Northern Lights Southern Smoke, is set to drop soon.

The latest leaked track from the project is this one featuring Year of the Blacksmith signees Strong Arm Steady and Chace Infinite (an unknown on my radar at this point).

Check it out below and let me know what you think.

Lupe stopped by DJ Semtex' show on BBC 1Xtra to drop a crazy freestyle alongside Sway, who you can find featured on Lupe's upcoming album, LASERS.

After hearing this, I kinda wish Lupe had been on "Monster" as well...or maybe in place of Nicki.

Chicago MC Rhymefest is currently in a run-off for the position of Alderman of Chicago's 20th ward.  Lupe Fiasco is getting ready to drop his 3rd (and possibly highest-anticipated) studio album, LASERS, early next month.  Kanye West is still riding high on the success of one of hip-hop's biggest albums, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.  Common is in the works on his latest project which he says will be a trip back to his roots as an MC (not to the squeaky-voiced adolescence of his earlier albums, but to the raw lyricism that he built his career on).

With all these Chicago artists and others making huge waves on the national stage, it seems fitting that a project like Visual's Chicago Hip-Hop History should drop at this point in time.

Check out the latest installment below and let me know what you think.

And, in case you missed it:

Been following this underground dude Future Sound for the better part of a year now.  Definitely like the stuff he's been putting out.

Check out his debut EP (not his first project, just his first Extended Play album), The Thrills, streaming below and download from Bandcamp if you dig it.

Finally, we get a new track from the Cool Kids from the still-long-awaited forthcoming When Fish Ride Bicycles album.  This one is supported on the Mountain Dew Green Label Sound imprint (who are also releasing the new album this Spring).

Now, my natural assumption is that a company as big as Mountain Dew (or Pepsi, who owns them) wouldn't be the best choice for aspiring artists - I'm talking in terms of creative freedom, music rights, and profit. However, I was pleasantly surprised to read this:
But now the PepsiCo soda brand is preparing to launch an iTunes storefront that will allow listeners to purchase music from certain Green Label Sound artists — and Mountain Dew is waiving the usual label share of the revenue, leaving all income, minus iTunes processing fees, to the artists.
Not a bad deal for the Cool Kids.  Plus a free track for you.  It's a win/win!

Stream and download "Bundle Up" below.  (Once you hit 'play' a little download gizmo will pop up.  Snazzy.)

Prince Ea returns with another killer track and video alongside Sha Stimuli.

The Make Smart Cool movement is well under way with  Prince Ea at the helm.  Support these artists by sharing this video and picking up any projects they've released in the past as well as the quality music they will no doubt continue to produce in the future.

A bunch of (incredibly un-revealing) behind-the-scenes footage was floating around for this video over the past week or so.

Now - if you were patient - you can finally get a good look at the actual video minus the BS.  (Although there is a little bit of an overload of wicked 90s style video effects in my opinion.)

Also, catch the mixtape (the one where this track came from) Let the Drummer Get Wicked HERE.

Rae is back with another heater from his upcoming Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang album (dropping March 7). This beat is definitely smooth as molasses.

Rick Ross is too prominent these days though.  Somebody get that dude a new job.

I've been all excited for the new Atmosphere album to drop (April 12) without ever really hearing anything for it yet.  That just changed.  Now I'm more excited AND I've heard some of it.

Check out Atmosphere's first single from the new album below.  It sounds like they're keeping with the eclectic style of When Life Gives You Lemons, which is exactly what I think most fans have been hoping for.  This one has a sort of reggae vibe with a cruising beat and a catchy-but-not-over-the-top hook.

You can download it from iTunes if you really want to show your support.  And if you're real excited, you can preorder the whole project right HERE.

Atmosphere - Just For Show by rhymesayers

Max Tannone (the guy who brought you the Mos Dub, Dub Kweli, and Jadiohead mashup albums) is back with a new project.

This time around, Max has taken the route of original material.  He teams up with MC Richard Rich over tracks sampling and inspired by the movie 'Moon' to deliver an angst-ridden exploration of the human psyche in isolation with original beats and lyrics.

Rich delivers a tense and realistically emotional performance of spoken word/rapping/singing over Tannone's eerie sci-fi beats for the full package.

The appeal of this to me (besides Max's unique beats) is the authentic human conflicts that Richard Rich explores in his lyrics.  The idea of the vastness of space representing infinite loneliness in an industrial-space-age world and the parallels between life on the moon vs. life in the military (away from family and friends and unable to control one's own actions and destiny) are pertinent.

Here's what Max Tannone has to say about the EP:
It's called SELENE, and is a 5 song hip-hop EP inspired by the 2009 sci-fi movie Moon (which you should definitely check out if you haven't seen!) Using samples from the film's original score, I teamed up with Brooklyn rap artist Richard Rich to explore themes like isolation, separation, self-realization, cloning, and all kinds of craziness.
highly recommend downloading this project.  You can download the entire EP in one swoop HERE or stream it below and download individual tracks via the player.

The latest track to drop from Lupe's LASERS album is one that Lupe calls his favorite from the project.

It's also his unofficial Black History Month anthem.

You can get this one over at iTunes, or just wait two weeks for the album to drop.

Either way, enjoy.

Props to RR for the stream.

Features on this track are heavy.  Travis spans his hip-hop rolodex to include everyone from Lil Wayne to Lupe to Wyclef and more.  Presenters on this one include XXL and DJ Whoo Kid.

Blu's new 10" (his first official solo release I believe, but I may be mistaken) dropped earlier this week.  The (almost) Valentine's Day release featured some old stuff from a preview mixtape, as well as some new stuff.

This one's called "Amnesia (Remind)" - not to be confused with "Amnesia" from the HerFavoriteColo(u)r mixtape.

If you didn't catch a copy when it dropped, you can at least enjoy this one here...

It's always good to get some new shit from Blu.
Enjoy it.

Let's let Kweli give you a (brief) (dodgy) response...

Hot on the heels of John Legend & The Roots’ Grammy-winning night, Truelements presents the first single release from WAKE UP! RADIO — an epic collaboration between Black Thought, John Legend, and the God MC himself, Rakim — “In the Ghetto (Wake Up!)” Produced by J.Period, this history-making digital 12″ release pairs two of hip hop’s most legendary MC’s together on wax for the first time, with a soulful finale from R&B superstar, John Legend. Revisiting the themes of the Eric B. & Rakim original, “In the Ghetto (Wake Up!)” shines a new light on ghetto life to reveal that some things may have changed, but many more remain the same.

Everybody loves the Roots.  And everybody who loves the Roots should want to learn more about them, right?  And watching this will offer more insights into the band and the members so anyone who wants to learn more about them will be able to.  So...everyone wants to watch this.

Thus formal logic proves again that you need to do what I tell you.

Via OkayPlayer...
For the latest from OKPTV, we get an intimate mini-doc on the hardest working band in the biz, and now 4 time Grammy award winners, The Roots. Cam Be (director/editor) and Jeff Baraka (Interviewer/co-producer) tagged along with The Roots for a few stops on last year’s Hennessey Artistry tour, and got some great footage. Says Cam of the vid: “In this film I wanted to not only highlight the versatility of a group that has played with most everyone in the industry. But also capture candid moments of real human beings just trying to share the gifts they have been given to the best of their abilities.” Props to Cam, Jeff, and Bradley Murray for this.

T.Shirt is the first underground MC I would turn to if I wanted an alternate perspective on any topic, including Valentine's Day love.

I'm digging this track.  It's got a real 80s-movie-style production to it.  Can't wait for the final mastered version to drop.

Something special for the lovers. Whether you're single now or not, if you've been there, you know what I'm talking about. Real shit.

Happy belated VD.

Sincerely Yours here! ...I wanted to personally send out my single "Keeper Remix" ft. NidaNasheeda Produced by Slot A. The record is from my upcoming project titled Love Live Life.
So, this one was made available to me for a Valentine's Day release, but (as I stated in a previous post) I didn't get anything I got for Valentine's Day out in time.  SO, I'm going back through the inbox and this is one of the ones that slipped by.

Definitely worth the listen.  Play it for your girl.

This shit is fuckin solid.  Perfectly example of a UK dubstep production style (I don't know where the fuck Quickie Mart is from, but he's got that style man).  Sounds like some shit my dude 18andCounting would rock.

I'm still on the fence with this one.
The song has an interesting feel, and the difference in the MC's rhyme schemes are appreciated, but something is holding me back from a full endorsement.

Either way, it's definitely something worth posting.  It's definitely on point visually.

Let me know your thoughts on this one.

Props to RR for the stream.

Get ready for Rae's Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang album to drop March 8.

Yes, thee God.

J-Toth is preparing to unleash The Book of Toth in 2012 (assuming we don't all DIE in some godforsaken apocalyptic cataclysm, etc. etc.).  This is another banger from the album (he has an itchy trigger finger - don't blame him for leaks of great music!).

PS: You can catch up on the other leaks/releases HERE.  Enjoy.

This album came out in conjunction with J Dilla's birthday earlier this month, but I was 'out to lunch' so to speak and didn't drop it on time.  So, if you haven't found it elsewhere, here's a dream team underground collaboration in tribute to the late Jay Dee.

Grammy-winning bluesmen the Black Keys have just released a new video from their latest album, Brothers. It has a nice grind house/drive-in movie feel to it.

This dude's sound reminds me of a young Danny! or maybe something like Blake Symphony.  Chill and relaxed.

Check it out:

What do you do when your tired of hearing the same tunes? What do you do when you’ve lost your favorite cd? What did you do when your mom use to tell you to quit singing songs around her? If your anything like normal you did the abnormal. You did what others would deem as crazy. You sung the songs in your mind. Following up his 2009 release, yes it has been that long, Airborne drops his mixtape,”MindpodShuffle”, bound to find its way pass your ear drums to embed itself into your mind. This 14 track mixtape takes you through the mind of the 21 year old mc; who just happens to rap with the wisdom of a 2 decades older OG. Airborne keeps with his humble hearted, shoe loving, shy towards women persona. This tape, if anything, is a declaration towards Airborne’s skill as an emcee. The beauty about the tape is that it actually plays to its name; flowing in any direction you put it. You could hit random and let it roll.

"Shout out to all my white boys, white girls. I love them so."
Thanks, Rae.

04 Hollow Heart (feat. Canibus) by Elemental Zazen

Boston-bred emcee and born survivor Elemental Zazen presents the first single from his forthcoming album Nothing To Lose But Change, also featuring Fashawn and Jean Grae. In 2007, a month after losing a close family member in an accident and his home in a five-alarm fire, The Weekly Dig voted him one of '10 To Watch In 2007'. Shortly after undergoing brain surgery to remove a tumor - a procedure which left him with permanent sight damage - and learning how to walk again, The Boston Globe voted Zazen as one of their '5 Locals On The Verge' in 2008 for The Glass Should Be Full, the astonishing album he penned through those dark times. Of the album, the Boston Phoenix wrote: "given the pain that moved his pen at such agonizing angst-addled angles, his sophomore release is as hardcore an opus as Tupac's Me Against The World... it certifies that honesty, vulnerability, and introspection make for better hip-hop than masked insecurity and bullshit every single time."
To be perfectly honest, I've never heard of this dude before.  But this beat tape is fucking awesome.

Stream it and donate $5 to download it at his Bandcamp page HERE (you can also stream it below).  Or, download it for free HERE.

Whether you know him as Khris P of production duo KReam Team, or simply Octopus Jones, he has returned with another instrumental album to ease your mind. Due to an array of different sounds and the project ultimately being an expansion upon his previous album “Angler Fishing” (both are sample based), Sushi is exactly what the title suggests, an exquisite Sushi platter in audio form. The album contains 13 instrumentals that each utilize OJ’s unique drum patterns and head bob factor.

Rae's latest project, also called Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang, drops March 8th.

As if there weren't enough things with the same name, the audio in the introduction to this comes from the kung fu flick "Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang" starring Gordon "Ghost Face Killer" Liu.  Funny how that works.

Atmosphere returns with their 7th official studio album and the newest addition to their unparalleled body of work. The Family Sign comes from a place well refined and firmly planted, from a universal perspective. It’s about being okay with losing friends and strengthening your bonds with others, celebrating the person who’s been the most positive in your life, your kids, your homies, leaving the people you need to behind, and bringing the ones you love with you. It’s about your family, your time and the time you have with them. It’s about living and dying. It’s the truth about family, that it comes from loyalty as much as biology. It’s about breaking down your perceptions of family and really appreciating the people who’ve made you who you are and continue doing so.
The Family Sign is Atmosphere’s most personal and intimate album yet; it involves and engages the listener like never before. Slug’s signature voice weaves in and out of Ant’s ASR-born production, Nate Collis’ bluesy guitar riffs and the sound of Erick Anderson’s unmistakable keys giving The Family Sign a fresh, unique edge without sacrificing Atmosphere’s signature sound.

T. Barker took the stage on Jimmy Kimmel's late night show to perform the single from his upcoming album, Give the Drummer Some.  The actual studio version of this features Rick Ross and Weezy, so enjoy the alternate version.

The last time I posted a Travis Barker track I said something like "long gone are the days of Blink 182-style rythms" or whatever.  Well, it turns out I was dead wrong.  Throughout the course of making this album, Barker was also working with Mark Hoppus and Tom Delong on the next Blink 182 album!  40somethings making pop punk is just odd...

Nobody gets my head bobbing like Blu does right off the bat on this one.  Check him out alongside Freddie Gibbs and Homebody Sandman.  I just passed on seeing Gibbs live in St. Louis a couple weeks ago.  I'm kind of regretting that after hearing him rip apart this one.

(Maybe you already knew this shit, but I definitely did not.)

Everybody who's ever heard of Jay Dee is familiar with the now-iconic image of him smiling on the cover of (perhaps) his greatest release, Donuts.  But where did that picture actually come from?  Surprisingly, it wasn't a picture at all, but a still shot from a music video.

Check out the full story below (from director Andrew Gura who filmed the MED video for "Push" that this is from) AND catch the clip in question from the video shoot below that...
In 2005, stones throw records asked me to make a video for the MED song 'push'.

we shot in two locations, one in highland park and one on hollywood boulevard. as was expected, madlib didn't show up to set, but we were happily surprised when the semi-reclusive j. dilla did.

it meant a lot to pb wolf and stones throw, it meant a lot to MED, and it definitely meant a lot to me to have my set blessed by jay dee. (i'd met him on a few occasions before but it was usually brief and he was a man of few words around people he didn't know too well).

i even kept the camera rolling after the music stopped on a few takes because it was obvious that he and MED were having fun together.

the end result was accepted to BET programming but never saw airplay because, despite the huge producers attached to the project (j. dilla and just blaze), MED didn't have hot 97 spins. lesson learned.

one completely unexpected outcome of the project was as follows: months later when stones throw art director jeff jank was designing the cover for dilla's 2006 'donuts,' he realized that he had no unseen photos of dilla and that dilla's failing health made taking a new photo impossible. so he asked me if there were any stills from the shoot that might work for a record cover.

i picked about three out and sent them to him, and the rest, as they say, is history:
J Dilla - Donuts

ps: i almost forgot. probably the coolest thing that came out of this whole situation was something that egon told me. apparently dilla's mom said that she thought this photo perfectly captured her son's spirit.

This is one of the simplest, yet most bizarre stories behind a project being released that I've ever heard.  Essentially, 88-Keys needed space on his hard drive but didn't have a disc to backup old shit on.  So, in a charitable move, he decided to just throw it all up on the internet, delete it off his computer, and be done with it.

Here it is in his own words:
“I needed a disk today + I didn’t want to drag my lil’ ‘Looki’ outside this early = OPERATION: DELETE BEATS was now in full effect… So here they go for your amusement. By no means am I saying these are the freshest batch of beats you’ve ever heard or anything but these were all unfinished ‘ideas’ I laid down 7+ years ago & never went back to....

Old-ass beats I've recently come across which are now being ERASED!!! Farewell old beats... It was nice creating you. RIP”
I guess this means we can expect some new shit from 88 in the near future.  It's also nice to get a unique insight into the evolution of his skills.  7 years is a long ass time.

Check it out here for free!...

You're all in for a treat with this one.  If you missed the Day We Landed show last year, then you missed out on one of the funkiest performances in St. Louis hip-hop/funk/soul/whatever else.

Here's the breakdown: Black Spade spontaneously kicking out beats while drummer extraordinaire Dirty Lynt kept the rhythm heavy.  Meanwhile DJ Needles was going wild on his tables adding the maddest scratches you could imagine at a live show.  All that plus cheap drinks!  (Stella was the unofficial drink of the evening if I remember correctly.)

To accompany the brews and beats, Black Spade was kind enough to release and extremely limited The Day We Landed beat tape.  This extremely exclusive release was available only to those in attendance on the night of the show.

However, even though everyone who got a chance to get a copy felt ultra special and rocked out to it for months on end, the exclusivity left it relatively unknown to outsiders.

Well, that's no longer a problem.  Spade has decided to re-release the Day We Landed Beat Tape.  For free!  I don't know how long this is going to stay up, so be sure to download and enjoy it now before your time is up.

Believe me, this will be one of the best things you download all year.

I saw a couple comments online earlier by people who think Lupe put out "Words I Never Said" because Atlantic Records forced him to do something "controversial" to build hype.  Dunno.

It is interesting though that Lupe seems to not really care about people bootlegging his album when he has repeatedly complained about bootleggers in the past.  As a matter of fact, he's probably the foremost harshest critic of illegal downloads in the realm of hip-hop.  Whatev.

St. Louis hit-maker dropped a new compilation of beats for you to salivate over back in January.  Sorry for sleeping on this, but it's worth the wait.

Hungry MCs (ie. zombies) are gonna eat this shit up, I can feel it.

Check it out below and download that shit, son!  (And check his Bandcamp page here.)

Black Thought Performs New Song (Video) from themashup916 on Vimeo.

Tariq just dropped this bomb live the other night.  Other than the fact that the beat was produced by Danger Mouse, there hasn't been any word on details.

Holy shit, I wish I could afford to get out to this.  Who's got tickets?
That's right kids - one of Bob Marley's many talented children has decided to step out of his musical comfort zone and traverse the realm of comic books!

Ziggy, the oldest of the eleven Marley children, has created a "new hero for our times" with Marijuanaman.  He's an alien hero come to earth to spread the word and smoke some herb.

This ain't your granddaddy's comic book hero.

I wouldn't count on seeing the "Comics Code" seal of approval on this one.  It is pretty awesome that Image Comics picked it up though - they're one of the bigger players in the world of small comics publishers and arguably a big name by their own right.

Here's what Ziggy had to say about the character:
"MARIJUANAMAN represents the hope of the future... the hope that we will utilize all of the power that the universe has given us to save our planet."
Working alongside Marley on the project is none other than comic book/street art wunderkind, hip-hop aficionado, and St. Louis' own Jim Mahfood.  Here's what he has to share about the process:
“It’s been a really unique and thrilling project for me to work on. Ziggy Marley is a visionary and MARIJUANAMAN is his, so he's involved in every step, but he's also been cool enough to let Joe and I cut loose and really spread our artistic wings on this project. Through our collaboration, we are creating something that has a unique flavor and feeling. MARIJUANAMAN is not going to be what people except it to be.”
I've always said that the Justice League needs to take a chill pill - they're always running around frantically, fighting and yelling and shit.  Hopefully, Marijuanaman will be able to talk some sense into villains and heroes (and normal-folk) alike.

Look for the massive, 48-page, full color hardcover to be unveiled April 20th for around 25 bucks.

Even after Part 01 started as a brilliant idea, then flopped hard after months of setbacks and the loss of Mos Def, Ski hasn't given up hopes on the 24 Hour Karate School series.  He's back with some old favorites and some new burners without losing the theme or style.

Check out the official preview below and get ready for the ruckus.  (Don't expect too much here though - if nothing else, this video is just the beginning of a long series of hype-building videos and snippets.  All you really get is some footage of Sonny Chiba kicking ass over a beat crafted with an ambiguous sample from a Bruce Lee flick.)

Even though their most famous member, The Roots MC Black Thought, hasn't been very present in recent releases and performances, the Money Making Jam Boys have still been bringing it hard.

And if you really are only in it for the Thought, I have two points for you: 1. you're in luck, he's not entirely hidden on this project - in fact he's one of the official "presenters" of the mixtape along with 10deep; and 2. get over it.

And catch the tracklisting and all that right'chere:

Lupe's new album, LASERS, is officially up for pre-order.   For the big spenders, there's a bundle pack with a shirt and a patch and some other stuff.  The next step down is just the shirt and CD.  Then of course you can just purchase the CD/digital/vinyl of the album.

More interesting, however, is the tracklisting.  Check it out!

Some interesting features lined up.

* 2. Words I Never Said (Feat. Skylar Grey)

Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang (the album) drops March 8.

After casually leaking random remix tracks on over the past few weeks (catch a few HERE and HERE and HERE), he's finally dropped his full remix project, aptly titled The Remix Jawn

The album features remixes of classics by Notorious B.I.G., Q Tip, Outkast, and more and can be downloaded for FREE over at Nodzilla's Bandcamp page HERE.

Bandcamp limits how many downloads they'll allow, so go get it mang!

You certainly won't regret it.

Malkovich is preparing to drop a new mixtape, Ayatollah Presley, next month.  In the meantime, he just dropped this video for "The Gift", which will appear on the tape.

The video is low budget, but the lyricism is on point.  Definitely worth a listen.

Check it out below and keep an eye out for the mixtape when it hits.

The twins are back again to school you on the sounds of the underground.  It's a simple video, but the dark black and white in the seedy-looking basement conveys the message pretty well.

Check out Welcome to the Underground wherever fine music can be downloaded.  (Preview it and download the full album at Amazon.)
