The video was shot on-site in Nepal back in 09 as part of a series of Jay Electronica videos by Decon that were never released.

The cats over at OkayPlayer have apparently been sitting on it for over a year and just decided to release it.  Check out the video below, but first, here's what they had to say about the leak...
Well, long story short, this is Goldwatch’s vision for what a video for this song might look like, shot on location, and I’ve been sitting on it for over a year and half. People have really enjoyed it when I’ve shared this, now you can too. Posting this in recognition of May Day tomorrow, for all the people who worked hard to create these videos, part of larger project that spans the continents. … dont be mad at me, Jay.

NASA the government space organization, not the hip-hop-pop production duo.
This is pretty awesome though.  I'm not a huge fan of N.E.R.D., but they definitely have a huge influence on music.  For Skateboard P to take that influence and apply it to something like education and getting kids excited about science is an example of the power that artists can wield for good.  Love it or hate it, these kids will listen to him.  That's amazing.
Now, these kids needta get to tha learnin!

Wednesday, April 27, 2011 Presents: Little Dragon "Little Man" from Yours Truly on Vimeo.

Little Dragon turned out to be one of the best features on the Gorillaz' Plastic Beach album - and they were a great addition to the concert experience when they rocked Chicago.  Since that album, I've become a full-on Little Dragon fan.  This lady has got some serious style & talent.

Swedes rock.

I'm not a fan of Lupe's LASERS album.  Too much hype led to a final product that was more pop than hip-hop.  However, I haven't totally ruled out the fact that it was at least partially orchestrated by him.

We know he didn't set out to make a pop disc - he said himself that Atlantic Records forced all but 4 of the beats and hooks on him - but maybe he consciously rolled with it.  It's not that hard to believe that he allowed himself to make radio-friendly pop jams to get heard on the radio, but still laced the lyrics with poignant, politically/socially-charged lyrics for the kids to hear.  It's actually a pretty good plan to get conscious music heard.

It's just as easy to believe, unfortunately, that he made the pop to reach the airwaves, and laid out some rebellious bars to further built hype around the "controversy" of his lyrics and sell more albums to get that platinum status that he's been talking about deserving since his first album dropped.  We just don't really know.  Can't know.  But it doesn't really matter, because regardless of what he intended or let happen, the fact remains that the quality of LASERS is extremely low grade.

He scrapped his earlier album concept, LupE.N.D., and switched it to LASERS because it was too similar to a project that the Black Eyed Peas were working on at the time called The END.  What he didn't realize was that he still ended up making a Peas album.

That being said, "Words I Never Said" has some powerful lyrics - despite the teeny bopper hook.  It's one of two songs from the album that I genuinely enjoy - alongside "All Black Everything".

The "Words I Never Said" video is set to drop tonight, but if you're a real hip-hop fan, you probably won't be sitting up all night on MTV to catch the debut.  So here's a 30 second preview to give you a little taste before you look it up online tomorrow.

What's up producers, promoters, MCs, DJs, and whomever else has been awesome enough to continue to send in email submissions to the blog!  Thanks to you guys & gals, we're able to stay up-to-date on the best of the underground.

I've gotten a lot of positive feedback from artists and their teams and I want to increase that.  However, I've also gotten a few emails over the years from people who were upset that I didn't post their stuff.  If nothing else, I admire the persistence!  In case you were wondering, here's my process for reviewing submissions...

1. Open the email, read whatever's written.
2. Check out links to streaming songs, albums, or videos.
3. Decide whether or not I like it - I'm definitely not pretending to be objective in this whole process.  This site started as my own personal music blog and evolved into something bigger.  But the stuff shown is still just the stuff that I enjoy.
4. Either post it or don't.

You might have noticed that I DIDN'T mention downloading anything.  That's because I don't ever download stuff blindly!  That includes music submissions and every other email.  Didn't your friendly IT guy ever tell you not to download something if you don't know what it is?  Unless I can hear it first and I really dig it, then I'm not messing around with mp3, zip, wav, or any other formats on my hard drive.

So if you aren't seeing your stuff up on the blog, it might be because you aren't giving me a chance to listen to the music before subjecting my computer to the gamble of downloading!  (Also, my hard drive is chock full to the limit!  I just genuinely don't have the space to preview through downloads.)

So, sorry if you've been sending download links only with no way for me to preview and you aren't getting your stuff out there through this site because of it.  Not trying to hate, just thought I should let everybody know (some people have already gotten this message through email, but I figured I'd make it public).

Bottom line: I want to hear your music!  So send me youtube, vimeo, bandcamp, personal websites, other blog posts, whatever!  Just as long as I can check it out risk free.

Keep submitting.

Nice use of eclectic, ambient sounds.  Nice sampling.  Wicked thematic transitions.  All around a solid beat tape.  Definitely give this one a listen.

....we recorded this record back in 2009 for DJ. ILLANOISE's mixtape REVENGE OF THE BACK PACKS....Top Cat is one of my favorite cartoons and De La Soul is one of my favorite groups. So when MP played the beat I had the vision and visual. I always liked the posse cut energy on this record, so when my BBE album Decade was put together I had to include this song....Edited by me btw. Enjoy

Got a little bit of a Sa-Ra feel to it.  That electro-soul-funk-jam vibe.
Very nice.

BOMBS (Bringing Out My Best Substance) comes June 1st 2011.

This track is what's sticky.
I'm from the land of love , the Bay Area. Where revolution and togetherness is celebrated. So I had to take time out and show appreciation to my home and all that can relate, on this very special day. I bring to you a treat to vibe out to, no matter your upbringing, you know the connection. "One Love, On Heart" - Bob Marley .

Awesome track with a nice, simple video to set the mood.
I would be totally fine if it didn't have that dumbfuck WorldStarHipHop shit on the front of it the whole damn time, though.

Should be any minute now that he graduates to even bigger recognition.

So if you've been following the blog recently, you've seen my excitement over leaks of clips of the Beastie Boys' 30 minute film, "Fight For Your Right Revisited".

First, there was the preview cut, which gave you a two minute taste of what was to come.  Check that out HERE.

Then, there came the "Make Some Noise" music video that dropped yesterday, which was comprised of clips from the film.  Catch it HERE.

Finally, we get to see the full video.  Check it out in all its glory below.  The cast and cameos in this are amazing. I didn't see a shot of a single person who wasn't famous.  The Beasties must have called in a lot of favors on this one.  (They even make appearances themselves as the cops at the end.)

Watch it below in three parts.

Yo!!! I have a new song with Chicago's own Vince Nantes. Its called "Party Girl". Basically we sat down and wrote a song about chicks that party a lil too much, know anyone like that? LOL. ENJOY!!!!

Madlib & Frank Nitt - What Can U Tell Me, feat. MED by stonesthrow

This shit is solid.  Signif just became my new favorite female MC and definitely on the short list of favorite underground MCs in general.  Fuck a Pink Barbie and all that other bullshit.

GeeWiz kills it on the beats and the mix too.

Significant Wizdom is just an all around solid piece of work - it's lyrically advanced, the beats are chill, the production is tight, and the overall mood is something I can definitely get down to.

Check it out below, read what the group has to say, download, and repeat.
Milwaukee-bred NYC resident SigNif follows up last year's The Transition with the Significant Wizdom EP, produced entirely by partner in crime Gee Wiz. "We worked together on The Transition, and felt we should continue to work together because of the chemistry we had," says SigNif. "The EP is more aggressive, in-your-face. It's about me standing my ground as a female emcee who refuses to back down even when confronted with adversity."

Mustache rap.

Sick beat, solid flow.  I'm definitely impressed with this dude.

Props to Jay-Z on dropping the release.

Age of Space by June 16th of the Trifidelix.

An electronic beat tape for martian stowaways in the depths of an intergalactic cruise ship. Produced live in June 16th's studio using samplers, keyboards, drum machines using Chris Krug's innovative 'liquid-documentation technology' before being bounced to MiniDisc. Lo-Fi at it's finest. Technology at it's most future-primitive.

Check out more info on June 16th HERE.

June 16th: Age Of Space by Crew932
These videos that Cudi drops with his albums are technically documentaries - they document his tours in a way I guess - but they don't make any damn sense and they don't really reveal anything.  The dude just parties and makes jokes and shit.

What a life!

They're still interesting to watch though, if you can make it through the whole thing.

When I told a friend a while back about Prince Ea and some of the shit he's done and accomplished (including winning numerous competitions), my friend said "Oh, so he's like...a competitive rapper?"

I laughed it off, but after I thought about it I realized that that's exactly what Prince Ea is.  In a good way - he's competing for your attention amidst an onslaught of weak music, advertising, and propaganda.  And all the while, he's proving himself lyrically in a variety of arenas - on stage and off, online, in public, and in sometimes huge contests.

Check out his entry in the Trojan Magnum Live Large Contest.  Catch more info HERE.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation just dropped what are supposed to be their full files on the incidents surrounding the deaths of 2Pac and B.I.G.

Gangsta rap, domestic terrorist plots, cover-ups.  This shit has all the makings of an action thriller with a killer soundtrack.  Now when do we find out which one of them shot JFK?

Sage Francis is great.  Sometimes he's a little too emotional for me...or maybe sometimes I'm just not emotional enough.  I'm sorry for doubting you, Sage.
This “Three Sheets to the Wind” demo is the first in a long series of demos I hope to release from my LI(F)E album (available now). Anyone who knows the album version will notice that this demo version is much slower than they’re used to. Also the music is less aggressive. While most of the demos have more of a hip hop feel, this one is still on the indie-rock tip. The music is by Chris Walla from Death Cab for Cutie and the demo was recorded in 2008 in Sage Francis’ home studio. – Sage Francis

Like a blond Bob Sagat, Ash can get nasty.

And just like that, he drops another effortless head-nodder with "Kids These Days".

I have to be honest - when Ash first came out with that "I Love College" bullshit, I fucking hated him.  Seriously. You can search the blog history, I ripped on him multiple times.  HOWEVER, he seems to have dropped the frat-rap crown long ago (pretty much immediately after that track dropped) and picked up the chilled-out goof-off robes.  I can get down with that.

Jeez, kids these days.

His name is Earl.

But before he was the MC known as Earl Sweatshirt as part of the group Odd Future, he went by the moniker Sly Tendencies.  This is an old cut from back in those days.  Even then he was flexing his chops with ease.

It's not the best quality, but who needs mastering, right?

...I wonder if he's reading this from some bizarro hiding spot out in the Andies or some shit.

Free Earl.

Fight For Your Right (Revisited)

An insanely awesome cast of actors and comedians team up to portray the Beastie Boys past and present, as well as a whole slew of people that they interact with and basically fuck with in this trailer for the 30 minute video.  Check out the full cast HERE.

The video will accompany the Beasties' new album, Hot Sauce Committee Part 2, when it drops May 3rd.

I, for one, am insanely stoked.

I suggest watching this one full-screen so you can catch all the amazing cameos.  There doesn't seem to be a single extra in the whole film - every single character is an amazing actor!

Well I definitely dig Mos' verse.

In this episode psychiatrist Dr. Borka helps them visualize themselves at age 80, and to reflect on what they believe to be their potential. His goal is to help them to think of the future and set goals to help them move forward with less anxiety and minimize stress.
This looks amazing.

Definitely watch this one through to the end so you don't miss Mikey's wicked Ski-Man Jesse character.

The Beasties get back to their roots with Hot Sauce Committee Part 2.
Don't ask about Part 1.

Seriously though, this is some classic BB shit.  I can't wait for this album to drop!

...Dad sounds like a creep at the end though.

And since you'd have to be an avid Lupe Fiasco fan (a la moi) to listen to him talk about what shitty job he worked when he was 17, here's a bonus for you.

A while back I posted some Lupe interview material where he says only 4 of the LASERS tracks were actually made and chosen by him, while the rest were essentially mandated by Atlantic Records. One of the ones he likes (and actually says is his favorite from the album) is "All Black Everything".

Well, it turns out that "A.B.E." was originally a beat intended for Dr. Dre's Detox album. Check it out:

Friday, April 1, 2011

“Made this one around Feb 09 too. I had actually sent another beat to Blu (that I later reworked & used for a “I Will” remix). He wrote to it but on second thought he was like naah I don’t know about this one. So I sent another beat and he sent back the recorded joint a few hours later. Initially it was one long verse, but I HAD to add another hook right in the middle because I thought it sounded so dope. I couldn’t find the right spot to cut the verse so ended up doing it cassettewalkmanwithnomorebatteries style.”
