Incoming transmission #8: reboot initialized...Optimus Grind loves guitars! That being said, heres a track from tha new Blank Generation project i'm doin wit Screwz...treat this song like tha whore she is and pass her around if you like it!

Gil Scott Heron, considered by some to be the "Godfather of Rap", passed away this morning.

There's lots to say about Gil, but I'm not necessarily the one to say it. He was a musician, poet, revolutionary, artist, leader, and more. His body of work spans decades, genres, and meanings.

BBC writer Peter Jackson (no, not the Lord of the Rings guy) sums up Heron's work and life as well as any in his BBC obituary. You can read it below, but first take a listen to some of Gil's more recent work alongside Nas.

When Gil Scott-Heron re-emerged a few years ago from a long period of musical exile, his acclaimed new album led to a reappraisal of his work and influence.

As he turned 60, the American author, poet, and musician was once again thrust into the public eye as he released his solo recording, I'm New Here, and follow-up remix album.

Remembered for his poetry set to melodic jazz and soulful protest songs in the 1960s and 70s, he was an unmistakable influence on an emerging generation of rappers and hip hop artists.

Yet he was quick to reject some of the more grandiose epithets such as the "Godfather of rap" and "the black Bob Dylan".

Most Wu-heads know that Raekwon and RZA haven't necessarily been on the best of terms as of late, and definitely haven't worked together directly for years.  Still, that won't stop me from listing new tracks from each of them in the same post, under the same title.

As it should be.

Wu-Tang forever.
Bros before hoes.

RZA: "Only the Rugged Survive"

Raekwon: "Rock N Roll" Remix ft. DJ Khaled, Game, Pharrell, and Busta Rhymes

See?  That wasn't so bad, guys.

Chalk dirty to me.

Simeon Viltz and Race are veteran Chicago duo The Primeridian, presenting their Tye Hill-produced single from Da Crack-A-Dawn mixtape in conjunction with All Natural,, Ruby Hornet, and Jugrnaut. Da Crack-A-Dawn features Buff1, Adad, Black Spade, Pugz Atomz, Rashid Hadee and more. Their 2008 Da Morning Afta album was produced almost exclusively by European producers like Nicolay, J-Ramm and Willowtreez. "[For our next release] we decided we wanted to work with all the producers in Chicago that we held in high regard," explains Simeon. "That became a genesis for the collaborations that wound up becoming Da Crack-A-Dawn."Of "Drop The Needle", Simeon says "The foundation was the drums: pulsating and hard-hitting."

Eternia touches a classic in response to Elzhi's "ONE LOVE", off the recently released "Elmatic" Nas Tribute Mixtape.

"Medicine for Mommy” is a tribute to the divine feminine aspect of creation. According to RIPKIN, this project is necessary because, "it’s a healing the world needs; the woman must take her rightful place back in alignment with the universe”. Consisting of five songs, each specifically attuned; this project fills a void and creates a balance concerning how Wombman has been typically addressed and referenced both musically and universally.

The NoYorker is back with another surprise full-length project.  As expected, the LP is completely un-mastered, lo-fi as hell.  The official drop announcement came as a link from Blu's twitter page to a threat on a Kanye West fan forum.  Odd as usual and much appreciated.

You can sample it for free below, but you'll have to part with a $10 donation to own this jewel. If you aren't sold yet, it might help to know that production on this one comes from no less than The Alchemist, Madlib, Hezekiah, Knxwledge, 9th Wonder, Nathan, and godleeBarnes.

When shit gets blown out of hand, it hits the fan.
Quote me on that.

From Spitta's forthcoming Weekend at Burnies project.

For those who didn't know, the word "caliph" means ruler.  St. Louis MC Nato Caliph re-establishes himself as a lyrical ruler on a regular basis.  In "Consumption" he earns his title once more and shows his versatility as a hip-hop artist.

The Family Affair twins and GLC hold the lines with solid features as well.

The Little Dragon crew is set to drop their 3rd studio album, Ritual Union, in July.  In the meantime, let your ears be relaxed into a coma with this uber-chill version of what might be the best track from their last album.

Listen and download...

The Men With Beards are back with another killer single.  This time they've aimed their beards towards the old-school American folk hero, Paul Bunyan!  Rumors had been circulating that Mr. Bunyan had plans to make an appearance on the album.  Now the rumors have been proven true.

Check out the MWB ode to truth, honor, and the American epic in this slightly humorous, borderline educational, moderately inspirational, and entirely hardcore banger.

Check out the official Men With Beards Facebook page to become a fan and catch a sample of other tracks, get album info, updates, and more.

The family is back with a new mixtape project for your listening pleasure.

Look for their next full-length project, Return to the Underground, very soon.

This is for all the winners.
If you a loser, get your bitch ass outta here.

Shinin, sheenin, and grinnin.
This shit is bizarre.

Props to RR.

Excellent interview complete with Colbert's patented satirical style.
Lupe gets the official Colbert Bump and follows it up with a performance of "Words I Never Said" alongside Skylar Grey.

For my money, T.Shirt is the #1 unsigned New York MC.  This dude has the flow, the style, and the business sense to make a name for himself worldwide.

For the time being though, he's grinding hard in one of the toughest cities in the world.  Check out his "Ode to Raekwon" below, and keep up on T.Shirt as we keep supporting his shit (check out the back logs), and over at his site,

My personal favorite track on Chef's new album.

This is the season of epic collaborations.
Jay-Z x Kanye
Eminem x Royce Da 5'9"
And now Jay Electronica x Lil B.  Granted, they're not huge names like those listed above, but they're definitely two of the most talked about newer cats.  Big talent, regardless of years in the spotlight.

Black Spade is an amazing St. Louis artist who's making a name for himself across the map.

He rolled with the Soul Tyde clique for a while, helped establish the hip-hop conglomerate The Force in STL, performs gigs big and small both solo and as a member of the hip-hop-soul-electro-funk-etc. group Hawthrone Headhunters, and does it all and more with unshakable style.

Check out his latest video from his To Build and Destroy mixtape project called "New African".

Check out his videography and numerous leaks, releases, videos, and remixes in the blog archives.

There are a lot of b-sides from Lupe's latest album, most of which leaked as songs that were intended to appear on the project, only to later be pulled by Atlantic.

One of them (possibly the best) was "What You Want".  Thankfully, Lupe didn't just let it die.  Instead, he gave it to frequent collaborator and Neptunes member Chad Hugo for a synthed out remix.

Check it out.

Preview Tyler's new solo effort before it drops this week.
As expected, he gets hella angsty, really angry, and lyrical as shit.  He definitely makes it a point to test the limits of his audience.
